Singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson will be starring in her own talk show titled The Kelly Clarkson Show, which is set to premiere on September 9. In a recent interview from People, the star opened up about how she balances her work duties with what’s important to her as a mom.
Kelly is presently balancing motherhood while not only filming her talk show but also The Voice. She’s a mom to River, 5, Remington, 3 and step-mom to husband Brandon Blackstock’s kids, Savannah, 18 and Seth, 12.
She mentioned that her 5-year-old, River has already requested that musician Chris Martin appears on the talk show to perform her favorite song.
Kelly has come a long way since her time as a contestant (and winner) on the first season of American Idol in 2002. Despite her fame and more recent career achievements, Kelly still struggles with mom guilt.
“I totally hide in a bathroom and I’m crying, going, ‘Oh my God, this is a lot.’ Everybody does. Every parent does, especially when you’re like, ‘Am I screwing up my children? Or nailing it? I have no idea. I’m sure a little of both,’” she told People.
Though Kelly may question her parenting, we don’t think she should be so critical of herself. We’re inspired that she wasn’t afraid to negotiate her new work schedule so that she could be there for her children.
“When we were doing the schedule for the show, I was like, ‘I have to drop my kids off at school.’ And I’m always the one who puts them to bed,” she recounted.
We applaud her for this. A healthy work-life balance is sometimes only possible by setting boundaries and making your needs—especially around flexibility—crystal clear to your workplace.
“You just have to prioritize and juggle and make people know it’s an important thing,” Kelly said, “And don’t feel guilty about it.”
